Any longtime supporters remember "Ishi längtar hem till AIK"?

    Hello all AIK supporters!

First let me apologize for writing this in English —*all I know about Swedish is how bad Google Translate is at translating it. I wouldn't put you through that.

I'm a blogger for CorneroftheGalaxy.com, a website covering the LA Galaxy. I'm working on an article about Stefan Ishizaki, who moved here this season and is already doing very well.

The chant "Ishi längtar hem till AIK" has really caught my attention. Are there any longtime supporters here who have been at a game where that chant was used? Or even been part of chanting it? I'm curious about the intent: is it mean-spirited, or teasing, or a sign of respect?

If anybody would be willing to share their experiences with me, feel free to shoot me an email: andrewcharlesschmidt@gmail.com Or reply here!

    Thanks so much,
    Andrew

I would say that the chant is a friendly tease directed at former AIK players and coaches. But is only used when the players new team is losing so that's why they should want to come back to AIK. Example of other players are Mattias Asper, goalie in Mjällby AIF, Rikard Norling former coach of Malmö FF.

I remember we sang it to Ishi in 2011, don't know about last years home game though..

Indeed. An also, due to the connection the player has to our club. We doesnt chant it to players we dont like - i think?

The chant itself is a sign of respect, I would say, atleast in Rikard Norlings case but Im not sure its fair to say that about Ishi.. I know we sang it last season for a couple of seconds but almost immediately we started singing that hes a whore, basically. The reason the chant was started last season was because he was going to our booth instead of his own team when we was changed (no clue if thats we word for it actually), so it was all just irony and had nothing to do with respect in that case. Ishizaki is not a respected man in AIK these days.

Understood, thanks for the replies! It's a good chant, a witty chant - and like all good chants it seems you can use it several ways. I'd love to see some MLS teams adopt it.

Is that just because it's been so long since he played for you?

thats one aspect, another one is that Elfsborg wich he played in isnt one of our favorite clubs if we have one :P.
and also he was one of the players who left his "hometeam" directly after our degradation in 2004.

But i would still say that he is in no way a hated player, and have many times expressed his feelings for AIK.
And the chant is chanted with a smile on the face as a "friendly tease" as Saerimner said it.

In my opinion Ishizaki was a closed chapter the moment he left AIK. Anytime he played in the opposite team after that I would think of him as any other player. And in case you don't know how we think of enemy players in AIK, WE HATE THEM ALL!!

How did you find out about the chant btw?

I remember the chant back in 2006? when we met Elfsborg away. Ishi was hated by few and still respected by many after not celebrating his Goal against us in a homegame. In Borås My group was sittning outside a pub in a odd area close to the arena when we spotted Stefan step in to his car, a couple of us started the chant and when he drove by he smiled, gave us a fast nod and a thumbs up. Then at the game the chant was sung even though Elfsborg was not ahead. Back then a LOT of us where hoping that he actually would return to AIK, but nowadays he might just as well stay in that pissclub...

About him moving to LA, well MSL will get a high quality player and i hope he helps your club to success but back to AIK, no thanks.

It is a bit of a tradition to tease ex players/coaches in AIK. "Rikard Norling håller på Gnaget" is a Chant that is directed against an ex AIK Trainer. It translates to "Rikard Norling chears for AIK" (Gnaget is another Name for AIK".

Our supporters are notorious for having a very long memory and for being extremely unforgiving to players that disrespect AIK by signing for a rival club. Choosing the right team when leaving AIK is absolutely crucial for the way we’d treat you in the future and if you’re like Stefan one of the best players in your position there’s probably only 2-3 clubs that you can represent in Sweden. Elfsborg was one of those clubs. Most people don’t find it difficult to respect him as a gentleman but after 7 years in Elfsborg I’d say very few of us want him to return as he has become too much Elfsborg. He has made his choice and it’s entirely up to him, but since I don’t really care about the club I won’t hold it against him either.

In the beginning the chant was sung out of respect for the person but later on as a way to taunt the opponent’s supporters. Since our club is the biggest in Scandinavia and by far the most disliked I’d say that the majority of the supporters of our rival teams will continue to label Ishizaki a “råtta” (rat) for the rest of his career. It’s simply more important that someone has represented AIK in the past than the fact that he’s a star player in Elfsborg today. They hated the chant as they saw him as one of them and became very defensive every time we sung it (mostly because they felt inferior I’d say). Quite amusing.

The video below shows a version of the chant being sung to Rikard Norling in the 88th minute of a 2-0 victory against Malmö FF. Shows a bit of how and when we sing it and as you can see it’s quite powerful stuff. But to be fair, this one should be taken literally as it is sung out of deep respect for a former manager with an immense AIK-heart that was fired after one of the most controversial board decisions in our history. People felt so upset when he was sacked that almost everyone involved were forced to resign themselves and since that day we’ve been patiently waiting for him to return. Not intended to tease anyone (which was the case with “Ishi längtar hem till AIK” even during the first couple of years).

That video is incredible. Thanks for sharing. I don't quite understand the “råtta” thing — do you mean AIK fans call him that? (Also, Anbo, check your PMs. Thanks!)

This is an awesome story and I'm going to try to fit it in the article if I can! If I could use your actual name instead of "gotlanning" it'd be even better —*PM me.

I stumbled across it while researching for what I thought would be a short summary of Ishizaki's career. It's sort of snowballed since then...

No, it means that AIK and it's fans are called "Gnaget" which kind of translates to "the rodents". It's a nickname that came up in early AIK-history, when the black match-shirts was washed so often and many times that the black colour got more of a greyish tone. The shirts looked like ratfur, and since then, AIK has been "Gnaget".

    .
We AIK fans call ourselves 'gnagare' which means 'rodents' whilst AIK is often referred to as 'Gnaget' which is a made up word. Rivals have taken to calling us 'rats' instead, to mock us. Rat is 'råtta' in swedish. If someone played for AIK, they are forever labeled as such.

We would never call anyone a “råtta”. If we don’t like you then the name calling can get pretty nasty and it’s definitely not PG-13 if you understand what I mean. “Whore” would be a compliment under those circumstances. But if we like you, which is often the case with former AIK-players, then you can bet others will hate you. That’s why the name calling never ends, even though you move or retire.

Stefan Ishizaki was an extremely important part in Elfsborg 2006-2013 and their supporters wanted him to be recognized as a Elfsborg-player, not a former AIK-player. But since they don’t really have any rivals and the only rivals that they do have hates our guts that was pretty much impossible. People continued to refer to him as the “filthy rat” and had no interest in acknowledging that he became one of the best players of the league while in Elfsborg. That’s essentially what the chant is all about.

We sing it to respect the player and tease the opponent over their insignificance compared to AIK. Everyone wants to come home as we are so much better, so much noisier and far more passionate than they’ll ever be. But even after we didn’t really want him back we continued to sing it as Elfsborg’s supporters took it personal. They became upset simply by the insinuation that Elfsborg was still a crappy team nobody cared about even after being favorites for the title for 7 straight seasons.

That’s at least my take on it.

Would be interesting to hear how "Ishi" perceived the chant, being on the receiving end so to speak.. :)
